MAREA

MaReA
Lead: Communauté d’Agglomération Pays Basque (CAPB).

Consortium: CAPB, UPPA, AZTI, RPT, BRGM, Casagec.

Dates: 2016 – 2019.

Funding: POCTEFA.

This project, which was conducted before the official launch of KOSTARISK was one of the founding collaboration of the lab. Coordinated by the GIS Littoral Basque and the CAPB, MAREA was a cross-border Franco-Spanish initiative funded by the European program POCTEFA, which aimed at improving the understanding and anticipation of coastal flooding and erosion risks along the Basque coast. It relied on the deployment of a real-time observation network—including coastal video stations, buoys, radars, and tide gauges—to gather critical data for studying extreme events. Observation was extended with high-resolution numerical modeling tools to characterize, analyze and predict the various impacts of storms on the coast. Seven representative coastal sites were studied to test the developed tools and adapt local management strategies. Field measurement campaigns were carried out, including extensive deployments in storm conditions at Biarritz and Zarauts study sites. The project promoted cooperation between local authorities and institutions by sharing knowledge and tools.
