Ambition
KOSTARISK ambition is to build on a strong public-private partnership to adopt an approach which covers the continuum between research, technological transfer and operational applications. For this prupose, research activities specifically concentrate on real scale investigations using both measurements and modelling approaches, with the Basque coast as a primary experimentation area. KOSTARISK roadmap is developed into the following 4 main axis:
AXIS #1: Characterization of coastal risks from the regional to the local scale
- Identify and understand physical processes controlling local coastal response to extreme storm events
- Develop new methods and indicators to qualify and quantify coastal hazards impact
- Improve knowledge on coastal hazards on diverse real scale configurations
AXIS #2: Development of coastal risk monitoring and observation systems
- Develop and maintain continuous coastal hazard monitoring systems
- Develop systems for optimized supervisory control and data analysis
- Produce standardized long-term databases on coastal hazard and impact
- Disseminate monitoring information in real time
AXIS #3: Development of multi-scale modelling tools for coastal hazards and associated impacts
- Develop new numerical and statistical tools
- Improve the accuracy and relevancy of coastal risk assessment
- Integrate advanced multi-scale modelling techniques into specialized Early Warning Systems
- Contribute in the development of short- and long-term protection strategies
AXIS #4: Promote research results, support awareness raising and public action
- Disseminate research results in the scientific community
- Disseminate research results in the society, with a specific focus on the support to local authorities for coastal risk management
- Participate to awareness raising and knowledge transfer to coastal communities
