Kostarisk joint research laboratory has received government funding managed by the French National Research Agency under the France 2030 Investment Plan (ref. ANR-16-IDEX-0002).

Motivation and history

Kostarisk is a cross-border joint laboratory dedicated to applied research on the observation and modeling of coastal risks. The creation of Kostarisk is motivated by the context of increased exposure of coastal areas to storm-induced risks such as coastal flooding, wave impact on littoral infrastructures, and erosion. Coastal risk management has now become a major issue for coastal managers and more broadly for public authorities, an issue to which Kostarisk aims to provide new solutions through an original partnership and innovative approaches.

The joint lab Kostarisk associates the Wave and Structure Interaction (IVS) team of the SIAME laboratory from the University of Pau (Anglet, France), the technological centre AZTI (Pasaia, Spain), and the ocean monitoring and forecasting center Rivages Pro Tech (Bidart, France), a subsidiary of the Suez Group. This public-private partnership relies on the complementarity of the respective skills of each member team, built on a collaboration of more than 15 years.
